LITHIUM BATTERIES and how to identify them (part1/3).

 

In 2017, Lithium batteries have found their way as OEM recommended battery technology in some high-performance KTM, Husqvarna, Honda and Yamaha motorcycles. all 4 of these OEM brands have chosen OptiMATE Lithium chargers as their charging partner of choice.

Lithium Ion batteries are very common in our day to day lives, we use them in our smartphones, laptops, power tools, etc… and now they are becoming more and more popular as 12V engine starter batteries.

Although Lithium Ion (Li-ion) is the general groupname used for all these batteries, there is a wide variety of Lithium Ion batteries types. The only type used as engine starter batteries is called Lithium Iron Phosphate, also known as Lithium Ferrous Phosphate or LFP (chemical formula LiFePO4).

Lithium engine starter batteries are 12.8V or 13.2V batteries and will be marked with a Li-ion / LFP or LiFePO4 battery typename. (see sample below)

LFP batteries are becoming more popular on the aftermarket and to inform everyone,TecMATE would like to share it’s knowledge on how to charge a Lithium engine starter battery correctly.

 

Even though LFP batteries are made to replace 12V lead acid batteries, how to charge them is completely different. That is why TecMATE, back in 2011, started the OptiMATE lithium productrange. 

Safe charge for a lithium starter battery is at 4 x 3.6V (14.4V) with a MAX charge of 14.6V and they last longest if kept between 13V and 14.4V at all times.

The charge voltage range for lithium is much more limited compared to a 12V lead acid battery, and therefore it is important to always use a Lithium specific battery charger when you want to charge a lithium starter battery.
